There is a new Peace Pole in Roseburg!

At the main entrance to City Hall we now have a beautiful five-sided peace pole made of a deep green soapstone. It sits on a base of columnar basalt and displays the hope "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in 10 languages - English, Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Swahili, Hindi and Chinook Jargon.

Hundreds of individuals and organizations donated the funds to purchase the new pole and the City of Roseburg provided the labor and equipment to install the peace pole in a highly visible location.

The pole was dedicated on 9/22/07 in a ceremony that included music and dynamic speakers. For this ceremony a peace chain was made of paper links sent by people from around the world. Over 4500 links containing messages about peace were contributed. Click here to learn more about the peace chain.

A Monument and a Movement

The monument we’ve got, and what a beautiful focal point. The movement: That's us!

We hope that every one of us will rise to the challenge the pole inspires: to become the peacemakers, to copy the words in stone to words on our hearts. It'll take a conscious commitment and plenty of practice, but what better thing could we possibly do with our energy? What more urgent need for the times?
